"A cornerstone in the cello repertoire, the six suites for solo cello by Bach constitute the ultimate test of a player's instrumental, intellectual and musical mastery. The latest to join their ranks is Benjamin Shapira. Mr. Shapira blended old and modern styles to communicate his very personal, predominantly lyrical approach to the Suites. He varied dynamics and expression, carefully preparing and pacing his climaxes. He underlined important voices. The playing brought out the individual character of each of the dances, and never lost sight of their gracious courtliness.

Mr. Shapira's technique was fully equal to this formidable task. His command of fingerboard and bow was admirable, his intonation reliable, his control of rhythm and tempo solid but not stiff. His tone was warm and full. Altogether, the concert represented a remarkable achievement. A packed house listened in rapt attention to almost three hours of uniquely demanding music, and despite the lateness of the hour, the audience seemed no smaller at the end than at the beginning"
